The anti-inflammatory activity of Sargassum hemiphyllum ethanol extract (SHEE) was investigated using RAW 264.7 cells and ICR mice in this study. As a result, SHEE inhibited the secretion of cytokines including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1¥â, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-¥á in RAW 264.7 cells without any cytotoxicity. Furthermore, it reduced not only the production of nitric oxide (NO) but also the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, nuclear factor (NF)-kappa B, and mitogenactivated protein kinases (MAPKs) in a dose-dependent manner. The formation of mouse ear edema and the number of infiltrated mast cells under croton oil-induced mouse model were inhibited after treatment of SHEE. These results suggest that SHEE can be used for treating inflammatory diseases as a natural anti-inflammatory resource in modern industry.
